Collagen was the first widely accepted and successful injectable material used to fill wrinkles, grooves and scars of the face. It represented a breakthrough for the treatment of problems that affected many men and women. It provided consistently good results with no down time. It remains a very good option, especially for the fine creases that develop around the mouth with age.
Restylane (Hyaluronic Acid) is a recent addition to the dermal filler arena and in some ways represents a significant improvement. It is excellent for furrows and to add volume to thin lips. When Restylane is compared to Collagen, it lasts longer, (4-6 months), Restylane is synthetic, (collagen is either bovine or human), can cause more swelling initially upon injection and does not require an initial skin test. This means that Restylane can be placed immediately, on the first visit.
At this time, Collagen and Restylane have specific areas where they produce the best results and are both available in our office.
