Reasons to Remove Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to erupt into your mouth. When they align properly, and the gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Unfortunately, proper alignment does not always happen. As such, the extraction of wisdom teeth is necessary when there is insufficient space. Such occurrences are common, and wisdom teeth can sometimes grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum tissue, or even remain entirely beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt successfully.

Why Wisdom Teeth Removal is Important

Poorly positioned impacted teeth can cause many problems. When the teeth partially erupt, the opening around the tooth allows bacteria to grow and may eventually cause infection, resulting in swelling, stiffness, pain, and illness. Pressure from the erupting wisdom tooth may move other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. The more severe problem occurs when tumors or cysts form around the impacted wisdom tooth, destroying the jawbone and adjacent healthy teeth. Removal of the offending impacted tooth or teeth usually resolves these problems. Early removal, between the ages of 14 and 18, is recommended as there is less risk to the patient because the roots have not completely formed making recovery time quicker. Early extraction allows the patient to avoid future problems and to decrease the surgical risk involved with the procedure.

Before Wisdom Tooth Extraction

With an examination and a digital x-ray of the mouth, Dr. Guyette will evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and determine if there are present or potential problems. Studies have shown that early evaluation and treatment result in a superior outcome for the patient. Using advanced Consult-PRO™ patient education software, Dr. Guyette will walk you through a digital depiction of your wisdom teeth and the treatment you require.
