Dr. Smutko is pleased to see patients at two locations. With offices in Scottsdale and Avondale, you can now choose where you’d like to be seen.

Your initial appointment is usually scheduled as a consultation. Our doctors will explain your diagnosis and treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed on the same day as the consultation. It is important to note that if the patient is under the age of 18 years old, he or she must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Without parental consent, we cannot evaluate or treat minors.

Dr. Smutko and their compassionate staff will create a personalized treatment plan catered to meet your specific needs. During your consultation, you will be assigned a specific staff member that will work with you throughout your entire case. If you have any questions regarding your treatment or anesthesia, you will always have the ability to speak to that staff member to get answers to your questions.

Additionally, Dr. Smutko and their staff will explain what to expect during your procedure, so you can make an informed decision that will best fit your needs. It is our goal to make your surgical experience as stress-free and pleasant as possible, while we maintain the highest level of safety for you.

If you haven’t done so already, you will need to fill out a patient history form. This form is designed to give us as much information about you as possible before you arrive in our office. View the  Patient Registration Form and simply complete the document by hitting submit which will transmit to our office over a secure server. If you have additional paperwork, such as a referral form, x-rays, or medication lists, simply bring those to your appointment, and we will scan them into your electronic chart.

By bringing the latest technology to the offices in Scottsdale and Avondale, we are able to give our patients the highest quality of care, with accurate and efficient results.

Dr. Smutko uses the latest technology that allows them to make the best diagnosis and perform the best treatments for each patient. Whether a digital panoramic x-ray will be needed or the more advanced Cone Beam CT Scan, the images are available to our doctors within minutes.

Anesthesia Options

In keeping with our commitment to your safety and comfort, we provide local anesthetic, Nitrous Oxide, IV sedation, general anesthetic and a range of sedation options at our practice serving Scottsdale, Avondale, and the greater Phoenix area. The ability to provide patients with safe, effective outpatient anesthesia has distinguished the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

As the surgical specialists of the dental profession, oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration. After attending dental school, completed four years of training in a hospital-based surgical residency program alongside medical residents in general surgery, anesthesia cases, and other specialties. During this time, completed a rotation on the medical anesthesiology service, during which time he became an expert on evaluating patients for anesthesia, administrating anesthesia, and monitoring the patient after anesthesia.

As a result of this extensive training, is well prepared to identify, diagnose and assess the source of discomfort and anxiety in each of his patients. This allows him to appropriately administer local anesthesia, all forms of sedation, and general anesthesia. He is experienced in airway management, establishing and maintaining intravenous lines, and managing complications and emergencies that could arise during the administration of anesthesia.

The best way to reduce any anxiety you may feel before your procedure is to make certain that you know what to expect before, during and after surgery. At the time of your consultation, will discuss the options that you have to keep you comfortable during your procedure.

Local anesthetic

Local anesthesia is a medicine that is injected with the purpose of blocking the sensation of pain. Local anesthetics are typically injected into the body area that needs to be anesthetized and not injected into the bloodstream (this would be an IV sedation method). Local anesthetic is used to numb the surgical site and causes a numb sensation in just a few minutes.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) – a safe and effective sedative agent that is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. This gas is not intended to put you to sleep, but it will help to relax you. Patients describe feeling like they are “floating” and may experience tingling in their arms and legs. The effects wear off shortly after the mask is removed.

Intravenous Sedation (IV Sedation)

Intravenous Sedation – or sometimes called, “Twilight” sedation. An injection of a sedative agent is administered and maintained throughout the procedure that provides an extremely pleasant form of sedation. General anesthesia is most commonly used for intensive medical procedures such as jaw surgery, but can also be administered for patients with extreme anxiety.

At the Guyette Facial & Oral Surgery Center, we offer our patients a comprehensive approach to planning their treatment. Digital imaging is valuable for its speed, accuracy, and minimal patient exposure. With a Cone Beam CT scan in our office, we can achieve everything under one roof.

With a focus on reconstructive dentistry and dental implant placement, our Cone Beam CT scan is regularly used and has enormous benefits when dealing with complex cases. The incredible accuracy of the images provides detail not possible with conventional x-ray films. The three-dimensional images obtained from the Cone Beam CT scan allows for accurate diagnosis, bone assessment, and precise location when placing dental implants. When a Cone Beam CT is not necessary, we have the digital panoramic x-ray to use for cases where a two-dimensional image is all that Dr. Smutko may need for your treatment.
