Single Tooth Replacement
Sometimes, you end up missing a tooth due to injury, accidents, disease, or genetics. There are several missing tooth replacement options available. One of these options is a single-tooth dental implant which involves implanting a connection device (also known as an abutment) that will connect your jawbone to your new realistic tooth. Olga Smutko, DDS, our expert here at Guyette Facial & Oral Surgery Center, is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. As an expert in dental implant procedures, Dr. Smutko utlizes training and experience to help patients through dental implant surgery to obtain renewed confidence.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
Dental implants have three components that work together, creating your single tooth replacement. These components are:
- The Implant – The implant is placed into your jawbone. We fuse it with your bone, and over time, it integrates as part of your dental makeup.
- The Abutment – The abutment is the connecting piece that connects the implant to the restoration.
- The Crown or Restoration – The restoration is the customized tooth we create to match your smile.

Advantages of Choosing Dental Implants for Tooth Replacement
Choosing dental implants for your tooth replacement has several other advantages. These include:
- Dental implants will most likely last you a lifetime.
- Implants integrate into the jawbone, bypassing any issues caused by decayed or damaged teeth or roots.
- Implants are easy to clean and maintain. Eventually, they’ll feel like they’re your own natural teeth.
- Your surrounding teeth are not affected by the dental implant procedure.
- Bone is better preserved, meaning you retain your smile and face shape.
- Looks and functions as a natural tooth.
Dental Implant Procedure
When we meet with you during your consultation for a dental implant procedure, we will be sure to provide you with any information you may need and the opportunity to ask questions. There are two types of dental implant procedures: a multi-stage implant and a single-stage implant.
- Multi-Stage Implants –
- This dental implant procedure will be scheduled over several appointments. During the first appointment, the implant device will be connected to your jaw, and often you will receive a temporary cap to wear over it. This takes six months to heal.
- After six months, you’ll have your second appointment, where your surgeon will attach an extension, which will take a couple of weeks to heal.
- The realistic restoration will be attached to the implant during your third appointment.
- Single-Stage Implants –
- Your surgeon will install the extension and the implant on the same day, eliminating the need for a second appointment. Once the implant is completely healed, the surgeon will install the permanent restoration.
