Sinus lift and bone grafting oral surgery procedures are performed to help the patient receive dental implants, which are posts (like the root of a natural tooth) that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line. This allows the surgeon to mount the replacement teeth in that area. The key benefit of a dental implant is that it doesn’t come loose like dentures and is considered permanent. Because each person is unique, a variety of techniques are used to make the jawbone capable of supporting an implant for a lifetime.

Sinus Lift and Graft

Our doctors will conduct an examination which may include x-rays or a CT scan to determine the best treatment options for each patient. When placing dental implants into the back part of the upper jaw, a sinus lift may be necessary. A sinus lift involves elevating the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material onto the sinus floor. This will allow for an implant to be placed, where before a dental implant would not have been possible.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are removed, the thin bone surrounding the extracted teeth can resorb over the several months that it takes to heal, making dental implant placement difficult or impossible. By placing a bone graft into the extraction socket at the time of the tooth removal, bone can be preserved, and an appropriate sized dental implant can typically be placed within 3-4 months. This type of bone graft requires no donor site but uses human, bovine, or equine graft material. All options, including the different types of bone grafts, will be discussed in detail before proceeding.

Ridge Augmentation

In cases when teeth have been extracted years earlier, the bony ridge shrinks and a bone graft is required to increase the ridge width and height. There are several areas of the body which are suitable for obtaining these types of bone grafts. In the facial region, bone grafts can be taken from inside the mouth from the lower jaw in the area of the chin or wisdom tooth region, or in the upper jaw behind the last tooth. In more extensive situations, when a greater quantity of bone is needed, the graft can be attained from the hip or the outer aspect of the tibia below the knee.

Dental implant and grafting surgeries are performed in our state-of-the-art surgical suites, usually under IV sedation. After discharge, limited physical activity is recommended for 1-5 days, depending on the extent of the surgery.
